Udzungwa Mountains National Park

Established in 1992, Udzungwa Mountains National Park is located in the southern highlands of Tanzania. The name "Udzungwa" is derived from "Wadsungwa," the name of an indigenous subtribe of the Hehe people who historically lived in the area. The park covers an area of 1990 km², with 20% of its land in the Morogoro region and the remaining 80% in Iringa.

Getting There

The park is accessible by road from Dar es Salaam (380 km), as well as from Arusha, Kilimanjaro, and Mbeya. There are also two airstrips, Msolwa and Kilombero, that can be used for air travel to the park, with a transfer by vehicle to the main entrance. Transport arrangements should be coordinated with bus companies, tour operators, or air travel agents, who provide schedules for flights and other travel options.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit is during the dry season (June to September) and the wet season (November to March), when wildflowers are in bloom, and butterflies are abundant. Bird watchers should visit between December and February, when migratory birds nest in the park.
